Pelicans pull closer to No. 4 spot in SOC KLAMATH FALLS - The race for fourth place in Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball got a whole lot closer Tuesday night. "In our minds, it was (a must-win)," Pelicans coach Bret Crawford said. "Crater had already beaten us at their place pretty soundly, and we knew we needed a split to avoid tying for fourth but being left out of the playoffs like last year (when KU lost a tiebreaker with North Medford because the Black Tornado swept the head-to-head series)." The Pelicans (5-5 SOC) were powered by a combined 50 points from the trio of sophomore Jacob Wynn (19 points), senior Jeff Pisan (16) and senior Nick Caleb (15). The Comets (6-4 SOC) lost junior post Andrew Norum to an ankle injury in the third quarter, and he did not return. "That was big key, obviously," said Crater coach Matt Meunier, who got 10 points and nine rebounds from Norum before the injury. KU had a 20-10 edge through one quarter, but the Comets rallied to take a two-point lead in the third. Caleb, however, dropped a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the third to give the Pelicans a 46-44 advantage entering the fourth. Down the stretch, KU shifted to a matchup zone and tracked Crater senior guards Derek Petersen and Chris Pettegrew individually. The tactic worked, limiting the Comets to nine points in the fourth quarter and holding both Petersen, who had a team-high 14 points total, and Pettegrew scoreless. "They couldn't get the ball to their big scorers, and that was pretty much it," Crawford said. Senior forward Trevor Ryan tallied 13 points for Crater. North Medford's Gabe Burchfiel, who was saddled with two early fouls, scored just two points in the first half but finished with 21 for the game. Teammate Zach Taylor added 17 points. Jeff DeLine dished out five assists for the Black Tornado, which dropped to 6-13 overall and 3-7 in the SOC. SOC Girls After building a comfortable 43-21 halftime lead, Crater (21-1, 12-0 SOC) held KU (1-11 SOC) to 13 second-half points. Senior guard Sarah Pool paced the Comets with 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Amy Denson had a season-low nine points, but the senior post provided the Comets with 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. The Comets received a boost from reserve junior guard Kelsey Anhorn's 10 points. Crater offset a mediocre shooting night from the field (43 percent) by outrebounding the Pelicans 42-18. Crater plays at Roseburg Friday with the conference championship on the line. The Comets handed Roseburg its only conference loss, 67-44, in Central Point earlier this season. ASHLAND 57, EAGLE POINT 51 - At Ashland, on senior night, Ashland needed the outside shooting of junior wing Stefanie Talbott and freshman point guard Alysse Carlson to hold off upset-minded Eagle Point. Talbott rained three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 17 points, and Carlson drilled two 3's in scoring 14 points. She added four assists and four steals. The Grizzlies (10-12 overall, 6-6 SOC), who are fighting Grants Pass (5-7 SOC) for the SOC's fourth and final postseason berth, built a 12-point halftime lead. But the Eagles (5-16, 2-10) cut their deficit to two entering the fourth quarter before Ashland hung on. Senior wing Dani Rouhier paced Eagle Point with a game-high 18 points, and sophomore post Ashley Curtis tossed in 14. The Grizzlies' leading scorer, junior post Marla Morin, scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Behind 27 points from senior star Lindsey Heard, the Indians (14-4 overall) improved to 11-1 in the SOC heading into Friday night's showdown with the first-place Comets (12-0 SOC). North Medford (5-17, 2-10) fell behind by 10 in the first quarter, then played the Indians fairly even through the remaining three quarters. The Black Tornado was led by junior post Kerstin Mellbye's 16 points and eight rebounds. North's new starting backcourt of freshman point guard Kailey Bostwick and sophomore Anna Lilly, who has slid over to shooting guard, combined for 16 points. Starting Tornado small forward Brittany Hodges missed her third straight game with a sprained ankle.
