Let me count the bottom line. According to a survey by the National Research Foundation, lovebirds will be forking over about $16.9 billion this Valentine's Day, a 22 percent jump from a year ago. Men historically have been know to be big spenders and this won't be any different as they plan on spending $156.22, which nearly doubles the $85.08 that the average female plans to spend. The most popular gift remains to be flowers, which 58.3 percent of men plan to buy their mate, following cards (56.7 percent), candy (42.9 percent), an evening out (53.1 percent), and jewelry (27.6 percent), the survey said. Most men will buy a special dinner, followed by flowers and candy. Coincidentally, women are hoping for these same gifts from their partners. The figures, which include the cost of dining out, put the average 18- to 24-year-old's spending at $154.65. The dollars dropped to $78.30 for 25- to 34-year-olds. An overwhelming majority, 84 percent, intend to buy gifts at a retail location, whereas only one-quarter shop online for Valentine's Day. "Men continue to be the primary spenders when it comes to splurging on gifts for Valentine's Day," said NRF President Tracy Mullin. "With males spending significantly more this year than females, men may be looking at Valentine's Day as a way to make up for that HD-TV they splurged on for the Super Bowl."
