The part you eat off of down, or up? -- Angel B., Medford Good question, Angel! We're assuming you are married or "significantly othered," and we're glad you asked because this is a conundrum that, unanswered by a professional, has ended many relationships. For your response we turned to our Since You Asked World Headquarters' Bachelor Squadron. Our bachelors are excellent at minimizing work in housekeeping, so they are naturals at telling you how to properly load the dishwasher, how to put the new toilet paper roll on, etc. The answer is most definitively eating side UP, unless of course it's a knife, in which case you overrule this on a technicality if you put the knife in business side up, you will stab yourself when you reach for a clean spoon to eat that late-night ice cream. The reason? With the eating side exposed, it is more readily cleaned by the washer's splashing water. If it's eating-side down, the cleansing waters are blocked by the silverware basket's mesh. Like, duh! Of course, our bachelors assert that there is no need to actually unload the dishwasher — except for immediate use — because this just creates more work and reduces your efficiency. Our bachelors recommend simply putting the dirty dishes back into the dishwasher using a careful but effective system. Much like rotating newproduce in a grocery store, you keep your clean, fresh dishes in front, dirties in back. When it's all dirty, you just turn it on and start over! A tip you can really use: Before starting the dishwasher, run hot water at the faucet nearest the dishwasher until it's very hot.
