What is it, and why was it installed? — Gary S., Eagle Point We know what you’re thinking Gary, but don’t worry. The Oregon Department of Transportation has not installed cameras to nab freeway speeders. According to District Manager John Vial, those soaring video cameras are part of a plan to ease traffic congestion when the I-5 viaduct overhaul begins this winter. One of the cameras points north, toward the interchange, while the second camera is focused south. A pole with two cameras also has been installed Barnett Road interchange in south Medford. Those four cameras aren’t operational yet. By the time work on the viaduct begins, however, the cameras will provide residents with views of the freeway. Those images can be accessed at tripcheck.com, the same state Web site that provides conditions over the Siskiyou Pass and other highways statewide. "Our hope is that travelers will use these cameras to assess traffic crossing the viaduct during construction and select different routes if delays are seen," Vial added.
