Obviously a person who does not approve of his brand of responsible action showing his sorrow for those left behind, Ms. Sinclair exhibits no restraint when taking him down for his ideology and that of the Democratic Party in general. No wonder we're a divided nation. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and their guns if law-abiding, but for heaven's sake! Get a grip! Now for the actual truth: Barack Obama is a former professor of constitutional law. He reveres the Constitution.He has never sought to repeal the Second Amendment, although a certain element in our society believes he intends to. All he would like to be able to do is to prevent those with mental illness or irresponsible behaviors from getting guns. Is this so terrible? It is Ms. Sinclair who distorts the truth. I would direct her to the Benghazi investigations and others like it that truly "never let a good crisis go to waste." M. Newby Medford Sorry, Mr. President I'm sorry about that guy in Roseburg who said President Obama was not welcome there after the school killings because his visit was "purely political" and because of his position on "gun control." I apologize for Oregonians who are so invested in protecting their personal right to have guns that this single issue overrides any responsibility we have to seek what is best for the common good over personal privilege. To tell the president that he was "not welcome" was the basest rudeness and pomposity. Not all Oregonians are that way. I thank him for his grace in visiting Roseburg. Roberta Bull Medford Exxon betrayed humanity During the '70s and '80s, Exxon’s scientists studied climate change. Their results showed carbon dioxide, the petroleum combustion by-product, was a major factor causing global warming, and that swift action was necessary to avoid costly consequences. In the late '90s, Exxon rejected these scientific conclusions and hired the same spin merchants the tobacco industry used decades before to deny the health hazards of tobacco. Again, the goal was to create public doubt by distorting accepted science. Due to the fossil fuel corporation campaign of denial, we now have a far more difficult and costly challenge: to stem the climate chaos they are causing. We know the petroleum industry has unbridled power. But did we know that they have long been denying their own climate research that confirmed global warming? Think of the climate denial this campaign has generated, the Congress of science deniers it has elected. Think what has been lost because of these "merchants of doubt." Why haven’t news sources covered this? Why aren’t we screaming about this injustice? We are accustomed to being ignored by corporate executives. Exxon should be held accountable; they have been immoral in their actions. By their actions, Exxon betrayed humanity. Louise Shawkat Ashland Still much to learn President Obama went to Roseburg, Oregon to offer condolences to the grieving families of the individuals who were killed at Umpgua Community College. Could we not for one day put aside our differences, and treat each other with respect? Apparently this was not possible. Even in grief we cannot be compassionate. And we think we can tell other nations how to get along. We have a great deal still to learn.
