Heath, Buchheim, Pritchett lead Phoenix COTTAGE GROVE -- Paced by the senior leadership of Kristen Heath, Anett Buchheim and Kathryn Pritchett, the Phoenix girls swim team continued its impressive run with a victory in a four-way meet Tuesday. Heath won the 100-meter freestyle at 59.09 and the 100 breaststroke at 1:19.30 in helping the Pirates (99) ease past Cottage Grove (74) in the girls team race. Reedsport finished third with 62 points, while Junction City had 60. Phoenix also placed first in the 200 freestyle relay, while Buchheim took second in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Pritchett finished second in the 100 butterfly. "This is a good year for the girls," said Phoenix coach Jim Heath. "They ought to be really competitive." Junction City rolled to the boys win with 127 points. Cottage Grove finished second at 79, followed by Phoenix (73) and Reedsport (25). Peter Thornhill earned the Pirates' lone first-place mark in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.83. The senior also finished third in the 200 IM. Sophomore Tony Byrd placed second in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly to help the Pirate cause, while all three Phoenix relay teams also finished second. Freshman Jacob Nelson placed third in the 500 freestyle in his debut in the event in 7:07.91.
