October 01. 2014 12:01AM Letters to the Editor, Oct. 1 The best man Jackson County voters have the opportunity to elect a well qualified state senator in Col. Dave Dotterrer. Dave spent the last two legislative sessions working for Rep. Dennis Richardson, searching for ways to lower the cost of government and help it operate efficiently. Dave wants to create an environment that encourages businesses to select Jackson County as their home by reducing regulations and taxes which inhibit growth. He will encourage educational opportunity for high school graduates to achieve the skills needed to find well-paying jobs and help ensure that school districts have the resources they need to provide all students the opportunity to reach their potential. A well-educated employee pool is essential to bring well-paying jobs to our area. Dave Dotterrer is the right candidate for Senate District 3. Oh, by the way, talking about the incumbent’s voting record is not “going negative," it’s telling the truth. Valerie T. Smullen, Central Point Anti-Bates ad preposterous Dave Dotterer's campaign has sunk to the "say anything" stage. Tuesday's mailer accusing State Sen. Alan Bates of being "anti-education" is preposterous. Long before Doc Bates was elected state representative, and later state senator, he was serving the needs of his community. He served 11 years on the Eagle Point School Board even while working full-time as a physician. He is a caring and community-minded individual. His commitment to public education was proved not by words but by countless hours of volunteer board service. In 1997, he was appointed to a two-year stint on the Governor's Committee for Excellence in Education. In 2014, Doc Bates fought to pass the strongest education budget in a decade, halting teacher layoffs and ballooning class sizes. He also made sure that autistic children would receive proven and effective treatment. Dotterrer's Salem ambitions do not excuse misrepresenting Doc Bate's commitment to educating Oregon's children.
