Mustangs sweep away Grants Pass GRANTS PASS - Shawn Backstrom and Tyler Engle had three hits to help the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team to an 8-2 win in the opener of a doubleheader sweep of the Grants Pass Nuggets on Wednesday. The Mustangs, who have won four straight to improve to 9-6-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, took advantage of a shaky Grants Pass defense in the nightcap to take a 9-2 victory and complete the sweep. In Game 1, Medford scored a run in each of the first four innings then added a solo run in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Backstrom had a string of eight consecutive hits snapped when he lined out in the sixth inning. He was 5-for-5 on Tuesday in a victory over Fairfield, Calif. Matt Skundrick and Tony Conklin each added two hits apiece. In Game 2, the Mustangs managed only three hits and one earned run off Skyline Conference player-of-the-year Scott Hyde but took advantage of eight walks, three wild pitches and four pass balls by Grants Pass.
