Mail Tribune 100, Nov. 25 1922 By Alissa Corman Nov 25, 2022 11:47 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Nov. 25 1922 MEDFORD HOPES FOR POST SEASON GAME THIS YEAR Local football fans seem to be of the opinion that if Medford defeats Ashland Thanksgiving Day that she will be one of the claimants to the state championship and are already talking of a game with Corvallis high school which is rated as the best in the Willamette valley. Oregon City, Redmond, Corvallis and Medford are regarded as the most formidable contenders. Oregon City and Redmond will pay soon, settling the question in their territory. Corvallis has a game with Albany and a game with Lebanon and Medford must defeat Ashland before any definite arrangement can be reached. The winner of the Willamette valley title will be obliged to play a post season game with Redmond or Oregon City, according to local football gossip, before a game with the winner can be arranged with Medford. All the local fans hope that the game may be played in Medford, if the State Athletic Board of Control will give assent to the post season games for the championship as football fans in the northern part of the state have the opportunity to see college games all season while southern Oregon fans seldom have the opportunity to see a first class game with the exception of those between Medford and Ashland. Principal Campbell of the local high school states that the entire question rests with the permission of the state board to play post-season games for the championship. He declares that no matter who wins the Thanksgiving Day game, Medford or Ashland, that he would like to see the question of the state championship definitely settled among the high schools of the different districts, regardless of Medford’s chances at the title. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The public market will be open as usual next week Tuesday and Thursday up to 10 a.m. Although the latter day is Thursday a big morning business is expected at the market that day. The market of today was a very good one with plentiful supplies of seasonable produce and poultry and meats on sale. ----- Supporters of the local football team are pleased with the present dry, clear weather and hope that it will continue until after the Thanksgiving Day game with Ashland at Ashland at two o’clock. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
