Mail Tribune 100: Oct. 26, 1917 Thursday Oct 26, 2017 at 12:01 AM Oct. 26, 1917 ESTES PAYS FINE AFTER TWO MONTHS IN COUNTY JAIL Rankin Estes, the former Front Street pool, billiard and card room proprietor, who was sentenced to six months in jail and fined $500 for bootlegging, is now a free man after having served only two months of his sentence. He paid his fine of $500 to Justice of the Peace Taylor Thursday afternoon, despite the fact that he had asserted ever since his arrest that he would not pay it, but would work it out in jail, and asked that his sentence be suspended. Justice Taylor, who had been previously advised by County Prosecutor Roberts that he had no objections to the sentence being suspended, thereupon suspended the sentence and wrote into the court record, "sentence suspended until further orders." "I was willing to suspend the sentence," said Justice Taylor later, "because Estes has already been bitterly punished for his violation of the liquor law, because of his previous general good reputation, the fact that he has been a model prisoner while in jail, and because I think that his punishment has done him a world of good and that he is a reformed man." Shortly after his commitment to the county jail, Estes sold out his place of business. It is reported that he will not remain in Medford, but will make his residence elsewhere. Estes was arrested by County Liquor Investigator Porter and assistants while returning from a trip to Hornbrook in his auto late one night, and in the auto was found many quarts of whiskey. Later Sheriff Jennings raided his home in this city, where 35 more quarts of whiskey were found. In the car and at his home, in all about 80 quarts of whiskey were confiscated by the authorities. Estes, according to general report about town, had been for months selling whiskey to customers in his place of business.
