PREP GIRLS GOLF Oshiro, Ford win state titles Crater junior takes crown, St. Mary's secures titles Comment By Frank Silow Mail Tribune Follow @@MTsports MailTribune.com By Frank Silow Mail Tribune Follow @@MTsports Posted May. 18, 2016 at 2:00 AM By Frank Silow Mail Tribune Follow @@MTsports Posted May. 18, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Crater’s Kiana Oshiro scored a record-setting performance at the Class 5A girls golf state tournament Monday. And on Tuesday, the Comet junior achieved a state championship — the second straight for Crater. Oshiro won medalist honors with a 36-hole 2-under-par 142 at Quail Valley Golf Course and the Comets produced their first state trophy in girls golf with a third-place showing. While Crater made a splash in Banks, the St. Mary’s girls took home the major hardware at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Redmond. Crusader sophomore Kamryn Ford defeated teammate Staesha Flock for the low individual score and St. Mary’s blew away the field with a 73-stroke victory over the next closest school for its first state championship in girls golf since 2009. Ford’s championship was the first for a girls golfer at St. Mary’s High. After posting the lowest score (67) in the history of the girls 5A state tournament on Monday, Oshiro turned in a steady round of 75 in more difficult conditions Tuesday and was the only golfer to break par for the tournament. Crater senior Daniele Giles, last year’s state champion, finished tied for fifth (157). “It wasn’t as clean of a round as (Oshiro) would have liked,” said Crater coach Brent Bowker, “but the greens were a lot quicker and the putting more difficult.” During Tuesday’s round, Oshiro double-bogeyed the par-4 second hole then answered back with a birdie on the par-5 third. She added a bogey and birdie on the front side to finish 1-over par. Oshiro opened with four straight pars on the back nine, then ran into trouble with a double bogey followed by a bogey. “Today was warmer and dryer and the greens were rolling faster,” explained the 17-year-old golfer. “It affected the speed and how much break.” The team and individual showing was vindication of sorts for Oshiro, who saw the Comets blow a chance to get to state as a team with a collapse at last year’s district tournament. Oshiro was later disqualified after the first round at state last season for signing an incorrect scorecard. “We were really disappointed we we didn’t make it to state as a team last year,” said Bowker, whose team squandered a 20-stroke advantage on the second day. “It really motivated our girls. “And Kiana took it as a good learning lesson. She went to extra measures this year.” Oshiro explained she took no chance for a mistake this time: “I triple-checked my scorecard and also went over it with another person.” “But in all honesty, I didn’t really care about the individual championship,” added Oshiro, who was runner-up at the 6A state tournament for North Medford in 2014. “I cared more about the team and the other girls receiving medals as well.” In the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament, some of Ford’s toughest competition came from teammates — runner-up Flock and freshman Kaylee Wu, who tied for fourth. Ford, who placed fifth at state last year, finished with a 9-over-par 153 while Flock came in at 157, four strokes better than third-place Trinity McCarthy of La Grande. Wu shot a 167. “(Ford) was never really threatened,” said St. Mary’s coach Kevin Dixon. “Kam started off playing really well. She didn’t make a lot of mistakes. She was just solid all the way around.” Ford, with two bogeys and seven pars, shot a 38 on the front side and was 5-over after the turn for a 79. Flock also carded a 79 with a 40-39 on the 5,280-yard layout. Senior Bella Yaeger, the Crusaders’ No. 4 player, posted her best score of the year (94) in the second round. “The girls really played well,” said Dixon. “I knew we could win if we just shot what we’ve been averaging, but we ended up shooting two of our top three rounds all season.” In the 6A tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course, junior Emmie Starchvick posted a 36-hole total of 183 for the best score for a South Medford team that placed 12th (796). Starchvick finished tied for 45th and sophomore Kirsten Reed recorded the second-best score for South with a 191. Reed posted a round of 90 on the second day, 11 shots better than her opening 18, and the lowest for a Panther in the tournament. Dana Jung, a North Medford freshman, finished tied for 41st (180) and Grants Pass golfers Sarah Skokan and Grace Hull were 47th (184) and 59th (191), respectively.
