Mail Tribune 100: April 21, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 21, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 21, 1916 LEVER ADDRESSES SCHOOL CHILDREN David Lever, who was director of one of the most interesting educational exhibits at the Panama Pacific exposition, addressed the high school students this afternoon on the lessons emphasized at that great exposition. He told the story of his exhibit, which gave fifty high school boys and girls a thorough business education in the palace of education, right on the exposition grounds. Everything was free to the lucky students—admission to the fair, tuition, books, supplies and incidentals. The exhibit was financed by such men as John Robert Gregg, whose system of shorthand is used in the local school, and other leaders in the field of commercial education. After six months of study in their glass-enclosed cages the students were graduated in the famous Court of Abundance. And now they are out in the world, earning a living, and some of them able to support the family. This exhibit, known as the Standard Commercial school, was awarded the grand prize, and Mr. Lever, the director, received a medal of honor for planning and successfully directing this remarkable exhibit. COUNCIL TO ACT ON RAILROAD TONIGHT Pursuant to adjournment taken by the city council at the city hall Tuesday night, it will meet again tonight at 7:30 o'clock to take up the Medford-Bullis Blue Ledge railroad project for final action. Inasmuch as the community is vitally interested in the success of this project, it is probable that a good attendance of citizens will be ready to receive the last word from the council on the matter of submitting the proposition to the people for a final expression of judgement on the proposed plan. EAGLE POINT EAGLETS The subject of the culture of sugar beets is being discussed again, and Joseph Riley, who owns a farm on Antelope creek, has concluded to put in about three acres as an experiment. The necessary amount of beet seed has arrived and those who are in the business are putting in their crop.
