Behind standout pitching and opportunistic hitting, the Indians remained undefeated in Southern Oregon Conference play with a pair of 6-2 wins in a matchup that had been postponed three times by poor field conditions brought on by heavy rain the past week. "It was great to be able to play today after having nine days off," said Thompson. "It was a little like starting the season all over again with all those days in between, but fortunately we were able to get it in today." Blake Keitzman struck out 10 and allowed three hits and two walks for a complete-game victory in Game 1, while Alex Cook struck out 12 and allowed only two hits with three walks in the nightcap for Roseburg (8-3, 6-0 SOC). "Blake and Alex did a great job of limiting their opportunities," said Thompson, "and offensively we were able to put some runs across when we needed them. The kids did a great job of battling back after having a tough week with the weather." Advertisement Brandt Walker was 2-for-4 with a two-run single in the third that put Roseburg ahead for good in the opener. Mitchell Nelson added a two-run single in the sixth to provide some insurance for Keitzman, who also scored twice. In Game 2, Keitzman sparked an early start with a first-inning single. He stole second and third before scoring on a fielder’s choice, while Quentin Clark added an RBI double to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. A two-run double by Brigham highlighted Roseburg’s four-run fifth inning that sealed the victory over Klamath Union (1-10, 0-6). The Indians next play at Grants Pass in a doubleheader on Saturday, then have another makeup game at home Monday against Ashland before hosting a Tuesday tilt with Crater. "We’ve got a lot of games coming up, that’s for sure," said Thompson. "We’re going to have some kids who’ll have their opportunity to throw in some tough spots and we’ll see what happens. The weather put us in this predicament and we’ll just have to play our way through it." Skyline Baseball NORTH VALLEY 17, ILLINOIS VALLEY 4 — At Merlin, North Valley took advantage Illinois Valley miscues to register its first Skyline Conference win of the season in the five-inning victory. The Knights (2-10, 1-5 Skyline) scored 10 runs — nine unearned — in the first inning to pull away. Marcos Morales, Mat Turner and Josh Makepeace each had two hits for North Valley, which played as the road team on its home field because IV’s field in Cave Junction was not playable due to rain. Doug Hoskins and Anthony Thomas each had two hits for the Cougars (0-9, 0-6). Jasmine Crowe had a two-run single in the opener while Ashley Roy also drove in a run for Roseburg. In Game 2, Crowe added two more RBIs and the Indians received two-hit efforts from Roy, Kristen Harris and Bryttny Kreshka. Skyline Softball ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Merlin, Illinois Valley tied the game in the seventh inning and scored an unearned run in the ninth off North Valley sophomore pitcher Trista Morton. The Cougars’ Meghan Jackson reached base on an error to open the ninth and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Ragsdale. North Valley (4-6, 3-3 Skyline) used three of its 11 hits to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Kellye DePorte opened with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. Trista Morton bunted for a single, then stole second to put runners at second and third. With two out, freshman Shawlena Haga came through with a two-run single. Ragsdale tripled and scored in the fifth for IV’s first run, then the Cougars tied the game on an RBI single by Tiffannee Griffin, which scored Erika Riley, who had reached on a bloop single. Trista Morton allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked one. For Illinois Valley, Ragsdale had two hits, while Shae Miller, Trista Morton, Teya Morton and Haga had two hits apiece for the Knights. MARY’S 10 — At Rogue River, St. Mary’s pitcher Brianna Williams gave up five hits, struck out nine and walked one, but 10 errors led to the Crusaders’ undoing. Offensively, Williams scored three runs and collected two hits, but had her pitching record drop to 5-4. Claire Crawley went 3-for-4 with three runs and Shelsea Rawson scored one run in going 2-for-4 for St. Mary’s (6-4, 1-3 District 6). Skyline Boys Golf MUSTANGS WIN FOUR-WAY — At Grants Pass, Hidden Valley’s Ryan Ruska beat out two teammates for medalist honors with an 85 at Dutcher Creek Golf Course to pace the Mustangs in a Skyline Conference four-way on Wednesday. Buoyed by Kyle Bleser’s 87 and an 89 by Reece Poulton, Hidden Valley also took team honors with a low score of 352. North Valley was second at 383.
