Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 20, 2005 Since WE Asked: A Test Of The High School Diploma Ask anyone, they’ll you that some part of the state school system needed to be tested to make sure that our children are getting the best education possible. But who to test? When in doubt, test the children. And so it was last week that a proposal reared its head in the state capitol to create an "exit exam" that high school seniors would be required to take before they could graduate. Good idea? Bad idea? That’s what we wanted to know from you. Your answers follow, along with this week’s new question ... which we promise you won’t need to know for the final. We asked: "Should Oregon establish an ‘exit exam’ that high school seniors would be required to pass before they are allowed to graduate?" Advertisement No! Exit tests should be given at each grade level starting with the first grade and should be called "report cards." — Dorothy C., Medford No. If high school students pass ACT or SAT tests, that’s all they need to get into college. Why create more paperwork? — Kathleen L., Billings, Montana Get rid of CIM and CAM and have a viable final exam as prerequisite for graduation. And get rid of any and all programs, mandates, etc., which prevent class room teachers from being able to have quality learning take place in the classroom. — Donald L., Rogue River Absolutely. — Gary B., Medford NO! — Michelle, Medford Yes, and let me explain myself. It’s obvious that kids just are not getting the education that they should to prepare themselves for higher learning or life. — Kevin B., Medford It bothers me, even scares me, that we should have to ask that question. It implies that we don’t already have standards which all students must meet, required courses which all students must take, and minimum requirements for demonstrating acceptable levels of understanding for those courses. Those standards were adequate 40 and 50 years ago. What happened? Maybe the test you speak of should be implemented to test the school system itself, to show us not where our kids are failing, but where the system is failing them. — Tom P., Jacksonville Yes, Oregon should establish and exit exam. Too many high school students slide through high school. This way we know that are educated a little. — Tanya, Cyberspace An exit exam is a good idea, but why not examine why graduating students should need this exam if they’re passing their classes with passing grades. Passing grades should be a "C" or better. This grade would signify the student is ready to graduate. — Vicki, Alaska Absolutely! Too many students want to take the GED to "graduate" (early) but it’s not the same as actually graduating. Accountability is huge and graduating should mean that you did the work, and are ready for college if you choose to go that route. Having had students that could not read, write, or spell, etc. is a shame and totally preventable. Being educated isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. — Heather H., Medford This Week’s Question You love’m. You hate’m. You get lost in their aisles. Yup, it’s Wal-Mart — the megachain store that seemingly has everything, including legions of supporters and detractors. Say what you will about their supercenters, their hiring practices, their swamping of local competition, their memos on how to improve public relations. The one thing you have to admit is ... they’re never boring. So, as a NEW new plan for the Medford supercenter goes through channels, we just had to ask: "Why has Wal-Mart has become such a lightning rod for controversy?" Please keep your answers brief and on the issue at hand. Responses received without your name and town can not be considered for publication.
