Not yet released for public review, the draft policy is aimed at clarifying procedures and making sure films of any rating relate directly to studies, said Phil Long, curriculum director. "My hope is to affirm the use of appropriate films and make it a non-issue from now on," Long said. The Medford School Board meets at 7 p.m. in the South Medford High School cafeteria. Board members will consider the matter in a study session before the meeting. A survey at the district’s two high schools revealed some 70 films that teachers have used, plan to use this year or hope to use in the future, Long said. "They were rated G to R," Long said. "They even had ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ Someone had a sense of humor." Advertisement Existing district policy, written in 1993 and revised in 2001, allows teachers to show R-rated commercial films if permission is granted by administrators and parents. In the past, that has included two particular films: "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler’s List." At a board retreat last summer, some members reported rumors that teachers were showing R-rated films without permission. "The real issue is, is it ever appropriate to show R-rated films?" Long said. If board members favor the draft policy, it will receive a first reading tonight before final approval at a later public session.
