The Raiders kept themselves in the thick of the conference race with a 83-81 victory over Concordia. Southern Oregon (12-12, 8-3 Cascade) improved its record to 5-1 in conference road games. Abell, a sophomore forward from Prineville, offensively paced a Raider squad that shot almost 60 percent from the field. Abell scored a game-high 28 points — shooting 9 of 12 from the field — and pulled down seven rebounds. Advertisement "Jared Abell was awesome," Southern Oregon coach Brian McDermott said. "He played as well of an all-around game as he has all year." After the Cavaliers opened up a 30-17 lead with nine minutes left in the opening half, SOU responded with a 18-4 run capped by a 3-pointer by Abell to give the Raiders a 35-34 lead with 3:15 to go. SOU held a 41-39 halftime advantage. The Raiders’ high shooting percentage was due to an effective transition offense. "They pressed a lot," said McDermott. "When we broke their pressure, we attacked the basket and got a lot of easy buckets." SOU led 81-77 with less than one minute left, but after Andre Johnson converted two free throws off a Raider turnover, the Cavs closed to 82-81 with 33 seconds remaining. SOU’s Steve Farley hit one-of-two free throws with 17.7 seconds left for another two-point lead, then Jim Voeks came up with a block on a Johnson jumper just before the buzzer to preserve the victory. Sophomore Shea Washington contributed to the win with 24 points and eight rebounds. "This victory got us back in the race," said McDermott. "With seven games left, we’ve given ourselves an opportunity. We really competed. We played harder than hell." Women’s Basketball CONCORDIA 86, SOUTHERN OREGON 81, OT — At Portland, Concordia junior Karla Flinn hit a free throw with 2.3 seconds left to force overtime, and Concordia outscored Southern Oregon 15-10 in extra time to earn its first conference victory. The Cavaliers overcame a six-point deficit with under three minutes to play to force overtime. It was Flinn coming into the forefront again in overtime, scoring five points including a clutch three-pointer moments after SOU’s Camille Porter had nailed a trey. Camille Porter and Lindsey Hilaire were the Raiders’ offensive stars with 26 and 23 points, respectively. The Raiders fell to 4-7 in conference and 5-13 overall.
