The Comets, ranked sixth at the 5A level, won 51-24 over Springfield, 48-30 over Anderson of California, 78-6 over Mazama and 60-6 over Del Norte of California. Culver, which owns eight of the last nine Class 2A/1A state championships, beat South Medford (56-18), Grants Pass (39-32), Springfield (59-18) and Phoenix (48-25). “I thought we had a great day,” said Crater head coach Greg Haga. “For us it’s the fourth week in a four-week grind and the kids really wrestled tough.” Zeth Brower (106 pounds), Dallas Howard (126), Logan Meek (152), Tommy Winningham (170), Wally Pendleton (195), Beau Crawford (220) and Javon Gill (285) each went undefeated in four duals for the Comets. Gill was especially impressive in coming through for the Comets, posting a pair of pins to go with a 3-0 overtime victory against Del Norte heavyweight Garret McAlexander. Brower and Winningham pinned all four of their opponents, with none of their matches reaching the third round. Eagle Point had a solid showing of its own, going 3-1 at the Classic with its lone defeat coming in a 49-25 setback against Grants Pass. The Eagles won 60-23 over Del Norte, 39-27 over Phoenix and 62-15 over Springfield. Thomas Zomerdyk (106) and Gage Graves (170) each posted 4-0 records for Eagle Point, with Zomerdyk pulling out a tough 9-7 decision over GP’s Barrett Titus and Graves scoring three pins and a forfeit victory. South Medford’s Cody Grossman paved the way by going unbeaten for his team at 113 pounds as the Panthers came up short against Culver but beat Klamath Union (58-15), Mazama (46-18) and Ashland (54-21). Grossman scored three pins and a forfeit victory for South Medford. Besides its setbacks against Eagle Point and Culver, Phoenix was able to score a 60-18 win over Del Norte. The Pirates joined Klamath Union as the only teams to wrestle three duals. Cedar King (138), Jessi Daniels (145) and Justin Knight (182) each went 3-0 to pace Phoenix, while Trace Vega (220) won his only two matches by fall. Ashland came up short against Mazama (44-27), Anderson (53-30), South Medford (54-21) and Grants Pass (72-12). Paul Pruitt won three of his four matches at 120 pounds and Loren Troutman did likewise at 132. ROSEBURG 48, NORTH MEDFORD 25: At Roseburg, North Medford’s Wyatt Westfall, ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds, scored a major decision at 182 over fourth-ranked Gage Maddux and the Black Tornado managed three pins to highlight action in the Southwest Conference dual against No. 1 Roseburg. Henry Cox (113), Anthony Neuenschwander (120) and Julian Stone (285) each earned pins for North Medford and Caleb Dix picked up a hard-fought 7-5 win at 145. In another marquee matchup, top-ranked Roseburg junior Layne Van Anrooy scored a third-round pin over No. 2-ranked North senior Cole Hornbrook at 160. 106 — Hunter Sparks, Ros, won by forfeit; 113 — Henry Cox, NM, pinned Tommy Spence, 1st round; 120 — Anthony Neuenschwander, NM, pinned Ashton Faas, 1st round; 126 — Bennett Mesa, Ros, tech. fall Dominic Deitrick, 24-9; 132 — Shane Sabins, Ros, pinned Tommy Hamilton, 1st round. 138 — Keegan McDowell, Ros, major dec. Joshua Robbins, 4-3 4OT; 220 — Will Reddekopp, Ros, pinned Jonathinn Casaday, 1st round; 285 — Julian Stone, NM, pinned Sam Homola, 2nd round. * starting weight MATTHEW DEYOUNG INVITATIONAL: At Gilchrist, Butte Falls/Prospect secured titles by Spencer Scofield and Luke McGonagle to win the five-school tournament, which pared down the weight classes to six. Scofield was named outstanding wrestler after posting three pins in the 160-170 bracket, while McGonagle went 4-0 with two pins and a technical fall victory at 195. Finishing second were Alex Neville (120-128), Christian Suarez (152-160) and Austin Harvey (160-170), while third place went to Mycala Patereau (120-128) and Collin Stephens (220-285). Billy Tucker was fourth at 195. Butte Falls/Prospect scored 67.5 points to top Chiloquin (39), Gilchrist (23), North Lake (10.5) and Hosanna Christian (4).
