A whistle can lead searchers to your position. A mirror or signal flares can be seen from an over-flying plane. A 50-gallon plastic garbage sack will insulate the body from cold and shed rain. An instant heat pack will add more warmth. Advertisement A hand-held global positioning system will show your location. Call police on a cell phone to relay your position. Stow everything in a small backpack or fanny pack. Bring as much water as you can carry — at least a quart — and granola bars or energy bars. Wear a hat to protect yourself from sunstroke and to keep warm at night.
