LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs fall short against Lower Columbia Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 25, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jun. 25, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News One bad hop and one error proved to be Medford’s undoing Wednesday as the Mustangs dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Lower Columbia Pacific Tech Construction in nonleague American Legion AAA baseball at Harry & David Field. Coming off an Area 4 doubleheader sweep of Roseburg, Medford switched things up a little bit against Lower Columbia and fared well in a contest that took only 1 hour, 46 minutes to complete. Bryce Rogan was steady in his second start of the summer on the mound, lasting 6⅓ innings for the Mustangs and allowing one earned run with two strikeouts and one walk in 73 pitches. Lower Columbia (15-5) struck first in the second inning when Cody Shepherd singled, was sacrificed to second and then scored on a grounder by Steven Christen that took a bad hop and eluded the shortstop. In the top of the eighth, Zak Schueller singled for Lower Columbia and, after a one-out walk to Quinton McDaniel, pinch-runner Cole Warren came in to score on an error. The Mustangs (13-5) missed their best chance to score in the eighth inning after Colton Westfall, who started at second base and singled in his first at-bat of the summer, reached on an error. Pinch-hitter Austin Zavala then drew a walk from starter Dyllan Reynolds but unfortunately Medford was unable to advance either runner. Cole Carder grounded into a fielder’s choice by the third baseman, then Jared Evans was thrown out on a bunt attempt and Micah Brown ended the frame with a groundout to third. Carder finished 2-for-4 for the Mustangs, who open tournament play Friday in Roseburg.
