South slides past Mazama Mail Tribune/Drew Fleming South Medfords Matt James dives under the tag of Mazamas Trevor Mauch as he safely steals second base and sets up Souths first run. South Medford coach Pete Whisler wasnt satisfied with the Panthers intensity against Class 3A defending state baseball champion Mazama at Miles Field Tuesday. But a strong pitching performance from Matt Skundrick and Clint Rodreick proved to be a big factor in the Panthers 2-1 non-conference victory. "Starting the game, I wasnt real pleased with our focus and it showed early," said Whisler. "We had the opportunity to break the game open. We werent ready to hit. "For the most part we have decent pitching. The kids are going to have to play with some emotion." Skundrick struck out eight, didnt walk a batter and allowed three singles in four innings. In the fourth, Mazama put runners on second and third with one out, but Skundrick struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam. "Mazama was overmatched against Matt," said Whisler. "He was totally in command. When we needed him to get some outs, he did. Thats the type of performance we need out of him." The Panthers (2-0) opened the scoring with an unearned run in the fourth. With two outs and nobody on base, Matt James reached when Viking first baseman Chris Bocchi dropped a throw. Rodreick walked and Ryan Norris delivered an RBI single. Mazama tied the game off Rodreick in the fifth on a pair of walks and Brian Quirks run-scoring hit. South answered in the bottom of the inning with what proved to be the winning run. Skundrick singled with one out and went to third on a passed ball. With the Vikings infield playing back, David Hennemans grounder to shortstop scored Skundrick. Rodreick blanked the Vikings the next two innings to pick up his first victory of the season. "Clint wasnt ready when he came in but settled down after that," said Whisler. "We got lucky today. They had opportunities to beat us. The big thing was our pitching came through when it had to."
