Just look at that stretch of rather drab real estate now. Pretty bleak. I'm sure that should the tribe put a casino there, it would be well done and enhance the area, both aesthetically and economically. Quite frankly, I don't believe that all the opposition fears of rising crime, prostitution, traffic woes, etc., will be manifest.  I say: let 'em build! It can only add to the area, which desperately needs some prosperity. Other businesses will spring up around it, just like what's happened around Walmart, where you all shop. S. Johnson, Medford Stop live animal acts Good news first: Ringling Brothers recently announced that they will be phasing out all elephant acts from their circuses and retire their elephants to a sanctuary. This comes after a long period of controversy surrounding whether or not intelligent and sensitive animals, like elephants, should be subject to the inherent suffering involved in the life of a performing animal, particularly a traveling performing animal. Now the bad news: While thrilled at this recent development, I was sad to learn that our own valley chose to host a traveling circus that uses an elephant as well as other exotic animals. Let's encourage all circuses to follow Ringling Brothers' lead and end the use of elephants in this disturbing and most unnecessary manner. Alissa Weaver, Jacksonville Coos casino support Because of recent Medford city government concerns, friends and relatives in Jackson County are writing to ask why the people of Coos County, through their elected and appointed representatives (the Coos Bay city manager and a Coos County commissioner) are supporting the Cedars at Bear Creek — the proposed Coquille Tribe casino in Medford. Please know that the endorsements appearing at the trib's Bear Creek website of longtime tribe lawyer and now county commissioner Cribbins and Coos Bay Manager Craddock are their personal endorsement, and may not represent the position of any local citizens. Fred Kirby, Coos Bay End daylight time In a recent editorial you explain why daylight savings time is an idea based on an invalid premise, one that should be ended. Then you suggest chaos will result from changing on our own and suggest waiting to end daylight savings time until the majority of the other states end it. You are wrong on several levels with this recommendation. First, I can tell you based on living for many years in Arizona (which does not do DST) that chaos does not result from not switching in lockstep with the rest of the country. For those who do daily business with other states some adjustments are required, but it is less of an issue than changing clocks back and forth. More importantly, Oregon is a bold leader in so many issues. Mail-in voting, environmental responsibility, death with dignity and many others. Why should Oregon be timid on ending DST? Warren Wilderson, Eagle Point Screen the tower light On the dispute over the Ashland cell tower beacon, keep it simple. The tower light is for airplanes, not for the people on the ground. Fabricate a fine screen with supports to block the light shining down. Place the proper light into this saucer-shaped area. The light will still shine above, but not below the tower, unless you are watching it from a hill that is above the red light. Using the proper screening saves on weight and cuts down on wind damage. Have a problem, find a solution. You may hear a whistling sound, but only when the wind is blowing.
