Mail Tribune 100: Oct. 23, 1915 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 23, 1915 BEGIN CAMPAIGN FOR ACREAGE FOR SUGAR FACTORY Systematic steps toward the securing of the $600,000 beet sugar factory in the Rogue River Valley were to begin Friday with the appointment of C.E. Gates, president of the Commercial Club, as chairman of the beet sugar committee, and the fixing of the Commercial Club as headquarters for the campaign. Today the Rogue River Canal Company signed contracts for 200 acres of land, and will sign up for as many more acres as the beet sugar company will accept as suitable for beet culture. The canal company will agree to and furnish water to anyone wanting to plant beets if they will sign up at once for water. W.H. Gore, president of the Medford National Bank, signed the first contract for 100 acres. Tests made upon beets grown this year in the Rogue River Valley show them to contain an average of 16.6 percent sugar, with an average purity of 80.6 percent. This is a high average in comparison with the beet sugar districts of the West. A letter has been received from R.T. Stinnett, of Lizzie Street, San Francisco, showing how the proposition is viewed in sections outside of the valley. It reads:"Gentlemen: Please send me a copy of the beet contract. I wish I could be there and help you tell the landowners of the Rogue River Valley what a good thing you are offering them. I grew beets in Colorado and know what it will mean for the growers of the Rogue River Valley. If I had 1,000 acres there, I would plant it all to beet. Yours for success, R.T. Stinnett."
