Horstman-sparked South Medford boys take Day 1 lead For South Medford to break through in Southern Oregon Conference boys golf, it's up to Noah Horstman to set the pace. The standout golfer did just that Friday in taking the first-round lead among individuals and, in turn, helping the Panthers to a slim advantage in the team competition of the two-day Southern Oregon Invitational. After a week of rain, the skies opened up Friday and made the course at Rogue Valley Country Club slightly more forgiving as Horstman carded a 3-under par 69. "Noah broke through for us today," said South Medford coach Bill Singler. "He's been looking to get down in the 60s in high school tournament play for the last few years and he finally did that today. "He's really the leader of our golf team so it's nice to see him break out." Horstman shot a 37 on the front but finished strong with a 4-under 32 on the back for his 69. Just two shots back heading into today's final round at Grants Pass Country Club is Grants Pass' Joey Rossknecht, who carded a 1-under 71. Rounding out the top five individuals are Mike Barry of North Medford (72), Adam Churnside of Sheldon (74) and Adam Browne of North Medford (74). In the team competition, South Medford combined to score a 304 to take a three stroke lead over North Medford (307). Roseburg is close by in third at 311, followed by Sheldon (312) and Klamath Union (315). "We played pretty well today," said Singler. "It's setting up to be a really good one with all those teams at the top."
