James "Jim" Van Calhoun Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 22, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Jan. 22, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News James "Jim" Van Calhoun, 70, passed away January 15, 2015, at his home along the Rogue River in Gold Hill. He was born in Pasco, Wash. January 13, 1945 to Van and Marie Calhoun. When he was two, the Calhoun family moved to the Rogue Valley where Jim attended St. Mary's schools, graduating in 1963. Jim earned a BS degree in education from SOC and received his Masters in speech pathology from Oregon College of Education. He worked in various Rogue Valley schools during his 31 years of employment with Jackson County ESD, retiring in 1999. During their retirement, Jim and his wife, Lynn, enjoyed many adventures with family and friends, including travels to Japan, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and three European jaunts. Jim felt very fortunate to experience four 28-day rafting trips through the Grand Canyon. They were huge Duck fans, attending all home games and many Bowl games. Known as the "Fish Whisperer", "Ol' Man River", Jimbo, Coon, and Goose to his friends, Jim had many interests. His family, fishing, and the Oregon Ducks were tops on his list. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, infectious smile, dry humor, respect, and kindness to all he met. A charter member of the Medford Sports Hall of Fame, Jim was an outstanding athlete. His name remains on the Track and Field board at St. Mary's HS for his record-breaking javelin throw in 1963. In addition to being a four-year letterman in three sports during high school, Jim also lettered for four years in both football and baseball at SOC. Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lynn Calhoun; three children, Joelle Calhoun, Palm Springs; Andrew (Shannon) Parisotto, North Andover, Mass.; Matthew (Christie) Calhoun, Fort Bragg, N.C.; nine grandchildren: Chadd, Davia, Brendon, Nicolas, Devin, TJ, Cecilia, Donny and Katherine; and three sisters, Pat Carrubba, Healdsburg, Calif.; Terri Tregarthen, Myrtle Beach, N.C.; and Debbie Caster, Central Point. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 at St. Mary's HS, 816 Black Oak Drive, Medford, Ore. Attendees are requested to leave their suits and ties at home and don "Jim-wear".... Duck shirts or fishing/hunting/camo attire. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim's name may be made to St. Mary's HS Athletic Fund or Providence Hospice, 2033 Commerce Dr, Medford, OR 97504. The family especially thanks St. Mary's High School and Bear Creek Church for their extraordinary assistance with Jim's memorial event.
