The tragedy couldn’t destroy the 29-year-old mother’s determination to provide for her three young boys since her husband’s death. By day, she toils cleaning other people’s homes while looking for one of her own. By night, the family moves between motels or “couch-surfs” with family and friends. Despite exhaustive searches, the mother has had no success finding a residence to rent. Nearly four years ago, her husband died young of type-2 diabetes. Yet the widow rarely is seen without a smile on her face, feeling thankful for each day, said Emily Freeman, project manager for Kids Unlimited. Community contributions of a car, clothing, shoes and household goods met the family’s most basic needs immediately following the August fire. But those donations won’t keep the family warm through winter. The boys, ages 4, 10 and 11, need sturdy coats, clothes and shoes. A special toy of their own would delight each of them. The oldest boy, who attends after-school programs at Kids Unlimited, wears size 10 pants. A student at Kids Unlimited Academy, the middle boy wears size 8 pants. Both wear medium shirts and size 3 shoes. The youngest wears pants and shirts in size 4T and size 2T shoes. The mother declined to specify any needs of her own and insists she doesn’t want any “handouts.” However, gift certificates for gas and groceries would help to stretch her income. She wears medium-sized shirts and coat and size 8-10 pants. To help, call Freeman at 541-774-3900, ext. 102.
