Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 6, 2005 Stoutenburgh qualifies for Foot Locker national meet Prep Notebook By DON HUNT Mail Tribune Isaac Stoutenburgh finds himself in some awfully fast company these days. The Crater High runner placed fifth out of 250 entrants at the West Regional Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. By finishing in the top eight, the University of Oregon-bound senior qualified for the Foot Locker national meet this weekend in San Diego. "Qualifying for the national meet has been a goal of Isaac’s for a long time," said Crater cross country coach Justin Loftus. "In a sense, it’s bigger than the state meet because the overall caliber of runner is so much better. There will be state champions all over the place." The regional meet featured runners from nine western states. Stoutenburgh was the only competitor outside of California who placed in the top seven. Advertisement Stoutenburgh and a dozen other runners blazed through the first mile in 4:38. The lead pack then hit a challenging series of switchback hills that staggered several of the runners. Stoutenburgh was ready for it, however, because he ran the course in October. "Knowing what to expect really helped," said Stoutenburgh, who hit the finish line in 15:43. "I just went hard through all that stuff and stayed mentally strong. "When we got to the top I looked around and there were eight of us. We worked together the last mile or so. We all knew we were going (to the national meet)." Stoutenburgh took his loss last month at the Class 4A state meet to Central Catholic’s Kenny Klotz very hard. Never mind that Klotz is among the very best high school distance runners in the country, or that Stoutenburgh beat everyone else. He didn’t feel as though he ran his best, and he was angry. But rather than stress out over the loss, Stoutenburgh channeled his anger into his workouts. "I had to re-focus and turn something that was negative into a positive," he said. "I started going harder in my workouts, and I think it paid off last weekend." Stoutenburgh has been running about 100 miles a week for the past 15 weeks, usually putting in two training sessions per day. That’s a lot of mileage, but Loftus believes his star runner will hold up physically and mentally. "I’ve had a lot of talks with him about risking injury and burnout, but he’s in good touch with his body and this is what he wants to do," said Loftus, who accompanies Stoutenburgh on many of his training runs. "Not every kid can handle the mileage that Isaac puts in, but his has been a gradual process. He started out at 45 miles a week his freshman year and has worked up (to 100). "He a real durable kid who wants to be pushed." Stoutenburgh, who has personal bests of 14:38 on a 5,000-meter cross country course and 4:11 for the mile, will take a short break after the Foot Locker national meet and then gear up for an indoor season that kicks off in January. FORMER SOUTH MEDFORD High standouts Eric and Ryan Fiegi put on quite a show when they played on opposite teams last Saturday night in Salem. Ryan Fiegi, a 6-foot-6 sophomore at Oregon Tech, pumped in a career-high 32 points, but his performance took a back seat to his 6-9 senior brother, who exploded for 55 points in leading Corban College (formally Western Baptist) to a 109-107 overtime victory. Eric Fiegi hit the winning basket with 2.5 seconds to play in the extra session. The elder Fiegi’s scoring outburst broke Corban’s single-game scoring record that had held for 35 years. The previous record of 52 points was set by Roger Mosier in 1970. "It’s something that hasn’t sunk in yet," said Eric Fiegi, who connected on 21 of 27 shots from the field and 13 of 16 from the free- throw line. Eric Fiegi also snagged 13 rebounds, while Ryan Fiegi had 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists to augment his 32 points. As for squaring off against his brother for the first time, Eric Fiegi said: "It was special to play against him in a huge rival game." Another ex-South Medford star — Ryan Heil — was also a factor in the game. He hit a 3-point basket with 1.8 seconds left in regulation that tied the game and sent it to overtime.
