Russell vaults record 11 feet YREKA, Calif . -- South Medford senior Kristin Russell broke her own school record, clearing 11 feet in the girls pole vault Saturday in the Yreka Invitational track and field meet. Russell, a two-time state placer, bettered meet and field records in the process in helping the Panthers to a third-place finish behind Henley and Rogue River. Sprinter Carie Knox won the 100 (12.72) and 200 (26.15) meters to lead Henley to its 91-point total in the 16-team invitational. Rogue River had 78 points and South 68. Rogue River picked up wins from Mindi Yost in the 300 hurdles (46.47), Jodi Minard in the 1,600 (5:26.51) and Selena Harman in the 3,200 (11:48.64) and won both relays. Yost's mark was the best among Class 3A hurdlers this year. She was seventh in last year's state meet. Yost teamed with Lindsey Clarida, Rachel Hinze and Keri Cain to win the 400 relay in 51.12. Yost, Hinze, Clarinda and Bobbi Wright turned in a 4:12.20 effort in the 1,600 relay. Lakeview's Kelli Holloway won the shot put (41-6) and discus (143-2). Both marks are 3A state bests. In the boys competition, South Medford junior Perry Custance tied a 19-year-old meet record with a 1:55.9 effort in the 800 meters. Grants Pass won the boys title with 97 points, Yreka followed with 92 and North Medford had 68. North Medford's Scott Meyers won the shot put with a 50-0 effort. Nick Dunn won the 300 hurdles in 40.01 and joined Black Tornado teammates Andrew Ludlow, Simon Driskell and Matt Parish to win the 1,600 relay. Jake Zeliff won the discus (153-9) and 200 meters (23.41) to lead Grants Pass to victory, while Parker Lane captured the 100 (11.41). Jon Micah Sumrall won the 110 high hurdles for South (15.46), Eagle Point's John Lucas won the 1,600 (4:27.44) and St. Mary's Trevor Coolidge took charge early and pulled away in the 3,200 (3:29.11). Jason May of Corning, who finished sixth in last year' California state meet, won the high jump at 6-7. In the Brookings-Harbor Invitational, Hidden Valley's boys picked up wins from Joe Samek in the high jump (5-10), Matt Kennedy in the javelin (160-0) and Jesse Johnson in the high hurdles (15.9) to go with a 1,600 relay (3:38.5) victory. The Mustangs outscored runner-up Reedsport, 107-84, in the 10-team meet. Brookings won the girls competition with 133 points, while North Valley was second with 92.
