Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 4, 1915 COUNCIL MOVES TO PROTECT SOURCE OF WATER SUPPLY At the meeting Tuesday evening, the city council adopted the following resolution to protect the city's water supply: Be it resolved by the city council of the city of Medford, Oregon: Section 1, That from and after the taking effect of this resolution all boating, hunting and fishing by the public in and upon the waters known as Fish Lake, in Jackson County, Oregon, shall be prohibited, and no camping or living by the public within two hundred yards from high water mark of said lake shall be allowed. Section 2, Inamuch as the water of the said Fish Lake is the water supply of the city of Medford, and the matter and things which this resolution propose to regulate is of the utmost importance and threatens to injuriously disturb the peace, impair the health, and annoy the society of the city, and inasmuch as it is for such reason necessary that such matters should be regulated, and that this resolution should become operative, an emergency is hereby declared to exist, and this resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately after its passage. NEW ROAD IN JACKSON COUNTY OF RARE BEAUTY (By M.J. Duryea, of the Ashland Commercial Club, in Portland Journal) The touring motorist who travels over the Pacific highway from Oregon to California will long remember the beauty of the scenery and the splendid character of the road bed of that part of his journey that lies between the city of Ashland and the California state line. The trip over the Siskiyou mountains is one of the most wonderful and beautiful rides in America, and people of Oregon may well consider this stretch of the Pacific highway as one of the biggest scenic assets they possess. The old journey over the Siskiyous on what was known as the Dollarhide toll road, was one of discomfort as well as danger. It was a "rough and rugged road," with grades as high as 30 per cent, that taxed the best of machines. Seven grade crossings over the tracks of the Southern Pacific made it dangerous, especially as the grades were heavy on rail and road.
