SOU's Matchett, Garboden earn honors ASHLAND - High-powered weekend performances landed two Southern Oregon University volleyball standouts first-time awards Monday. Sophomore Kristina Matchett became the school's first NAIA player of the week, while senior Sabrina Garboden earned Cascade Conference and regional setter-of-the-week honors. Matchett, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Klamath Falls, broke the school match kill record with 33 in a four-game victory over Albertson College last Friday, surpassing the old mark of 30 established by Crystina Brazie in a 1995 five-gamer against Northwest Nazarene. The KU graduate also established a single-game kill record with 14 in the second stanza. Matchett struck for 25 more kills in SOU's Saturday sweep of Eastern Oregon. The three-time Southern Oregon Conference all-star finished the weekend 58-for-94 with only seven errors, an 8.29 game clip and an .543 efficiency that upped her conference-best averages in both categories to 5.95 and .380, respectively. Matchett, who also earned conference and regional weekly honors for the second time in three weeks and for the fourth time in her career, is the first nonsetter and only the third Raider ever to earn an NAIA weekly award in the program's 30-year history. Garboden, who served as a defensive specialist the past three seasons, garnered the conference and regional kudos after assisting all but two of Matchett's kills and 108 of Southern's 128 over the weekend, a 15.43 game clip that raised her season total nearly half an assist to 11.78. The 5-foot-5 floor general from Aloha converted 43 percent of her assist attempts and compiled four aces, 20 digs and three blocks. Matchett and Garboden have helped Southern Oregon post a 13-4 season record, including an 8-3, second-place mark in league play. SOU visits rival Oregon Tech (11-5, 7-4) today.
