Balanced attack, tight defense carries Phoenix past Henley KLAMATH FALLS - With a 40-33 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Henley boys basketball team was on the verge of its first Skyline Conference and second overall victory of a frustrating season Tuesday night. But Phoenix had different plans. Powered by a balanced scoring attack that featured four Pirates in double figures and stifling man-to-man pressure defense, Phoenix stormed to a 21-10 fourth-quarter edge to claim a 54-50 win. The Pirates (5-5 overall, 1-0 Skyline), who had their first scheduled conference game postponed, got 13 points from junior post Brady Rhodes to lead the way. Rhodes drilled one of his two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and senior Meadow Lacy made two free throws to seal the win. The Hornets (1-10, 0-2) had three players tally in double figures, topped by senior point guard Frank Gauntz, who knocked down four 3-pointers in scoring 14 points. Sophomore post Brian Smith snagged 11 rebounds to accompany five points. "We're a young team, and we just haven't learned how to win yet," Henley coach Jess Schefstrom said. The Chieftains took advantage of their transition game, forcing Hidden Valley into 31 turnovers. Hidden Valley (3-9, 1-1 Skyline) was paced by Chris Jiron with 20 points. Beau Brown added 21 points and Daniel Houston 20 for the Cougars. Sam Kane's 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the game gave North Valley its first lead of the game, 53-52. The Cougars made 1-of-2 free throws to send the game into overtime. The Loggers (9-3, 3-0 Sky A) took advantage of 36 Prospect turnovers, with 29 coming in the first half. Butte Falls junior point guard Isaac Stephenson had a productive all-around game with 10 points, nine assists and seven steals. Nolan Lenderman led Prospect with 19 points. Titus Lockard tallied a game-high 20 points for New Hope, while Brighton junior point guard Travis Griess had 17 points, five assists, seven steals and three blocks.
