Police suspect the incident was gang related. Jose Guadalupe Cabral faces eight charges, including second-degree assault and first-degree criminal mischief, after the 1:02 a.m. altercation in a parking lot near 1 E. Main St., Medford. Cabral allegedly smashed three windows of a car and struck a passenger with a baseball bat, Medford police Lt. Tim George said Monday. Jailed and released was Francisco Javier Villa, 18, of White City, who was charged with disorderly conduct, reckless driving and attempting to elude police. Advertisement The incident allegedly occurred when Villa and Cabral drove past the VIBES teen nightclub and exchanged insults with a group of young men outside the club. The slurs may have centered on gang affiliations, George said. "The indication is at least the word ‘North Side’ was being kicked around," he said. The other young men shouted back and then went to a parking lot near VIBES to leave. Cabral allegedly confronted them there, George said. Injured was Omar Quiarte Duran, 19, of Talent. He suffered multiple small cuts on the left side of his face when Cabral struck the window of the car with the bat. Also in the car were Eduardo Ortiz, 20, and Julian Bautista Arroyo, 20, both of Talent. They were not injured. None of those involved in the incident had attended VIBES that night, director Tom Cole said. He said VIBES was closed when the fight broke out in a parking lot across the railroad tracks from the club. "These kids had nothing to do with our operations," Cole said. George said the fight didn’t appear connected to the club that hosts some 200 young people each week. "I don’t know if this is a VIBES incident or not. It looks to me like a street corner incident," he said. George said officers would be alert for signs of increased gang activity. "You have a drive-by shouting exchange and suddenly a baseball bat comes out," he said. "It certainly is cause for alarm on our end." Cabral remained lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $100,000 bail and an Immigration and Naturalization Service hold.
