The Big 3 — Roseburg (12-2 SOC), Ashland (11-3) and North Medford (11-3) — took turns trading blows until the Indians took charge in the final week of the season. Their dominance translated into 11 of their players being voted to the 15-girl first team of the SOC all-star squad by conference coaches. Ashland and Roseburg each took the biggest piece of the pie, filling four slots apiece, while North grabbed three. Advertisement The Grizzlies, who placed five on the first team last season, didn’t fall far from their perch with senior right-side hitter Chelsea Van Lehn earning player-of-the-year honors — a year after teammate Marla Morin earned the same accolades. Bruce Myers was named coach of the year for the SOC-champion Indians, who travel to this weekend’s Class 4A state tournament as the conference’s No. 1 seed. "Coming into the season we, had a lot of expectations for Chelsea," says Ashland coach Josh Rohlfing, who’s watched Van Lehn develop into an SOC force during her two years of varsity play. "She is a more complete player than anyone I’ve ever had." Van Lehn, a first-teamer last season, boasted a .387 hitting percentage to go with a team-high 176 kills in SOC play. She also led in serve receive and was second in blocks and digs. "There’s not one thing that I’ve asked of Chelsea that she hasn’t done for the team," says Rohlfing. "She’s made huge strides to get to this level that she plays at." Joining Van Lehn on the first team are fellow Grizzlies Chey Hale (senior outside hitter), Kate Morris (senior setter) and Emily Stone (senior defensive specialist). Roseburg’s Emily Waldron, who earned first-team honors last season as a freshman, repeated the feat at outside hitter. Teammates Katie Fuller (senior middle), Lindsy Bartholomew (senior setter) and Natalie Hooper (junior defensive specialist) also made the team. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Walters, who led North with 151 kills (the second-highest total in school history during the conference slate), earned a spot on the first team. She also shattered the school’s single-season mark in aces with 57. Walters — whom North coach Ron Beick calls one of the best he’s ever come across in his 26 years of coaching volleyball — is joined on the first team by versatile junior setter Allanah Munson and senior defensive specialist and team captain Jenna Siebenlist. Senior middle Ashley Curtis, also a repeat from last year’s first team, and teammate Amanda Grieve (senior defensive specialist) represent Eagle Point, the SOC’s No. 4 team. Grants Pass’ Shanna Claflin (senior middle) and South Medford’s Jennifer Mendenhall (junior middle) round out the first team. SOC Volleyball All-Conference FIRST TEAM Player Team Yr.
