Colts gallop past North Jackson Sometimes the long route is even more fulfilling when you haven’t reached the state playoffs in eight years of existence. The South Medford Colts couldn’t get it done on Saturday, but took the final door to the American Legion A baseball tournament on Monday. The Colts, which dropped a 13-1 game to Roseburg Pepsi on Saturday in a contest that crowned Pepsi the No. 1 seed and Area 4 champion, scored five runs in the third inning to secure a 10-5 victory over North Jackson. With the win, South Medford (26-8), now in its eighth year of American Legion existence, secures the second and final seed out of Area 4 heading into the state playoffs in Portland. The Colts play Bend Strike Force Friday at 9:30 a.m. Advertisement "This is exciting for the kids, coaches and everybody," said South coach Steve Antich. "This is the reason we do this, so these kids can get this type of experience that will help in school ball." North Jackson, which closed out the season strong after a 4-10 start, scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the third to grab a 5-4 lead. The Colts answered behind a two-run single by Evan Norris and a two-run double by Dan Chancler. Starting pitcher Tyler Heil made the lead hold after a rocky start for his seventh win in eight decisions. "He’s still a young pitcher," said Antich, explaining his lanky right-hander’s early struggles. "I mean, he doesn’t even have his driver’s license yet. "But once he got that lead he did a great job and pretty much shut them down." Andy Narus led South’s 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance and three runs scored. Chancler added two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Ricky O’Callahan led North Jackson with two hits.
