Grace Elizabeth Ward, 28, is in the Shasta County Jail on felony counts of second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the wrong-way crash outside Redding that killed Ryan John Folsom, 29. California Highway Patrol arrested Ward at 10:50 a.m. today. At just after 12:15 p.m. Jan. 8, Ward drove a 2009 Chevrolet Impala sedan at high speed northbound in the southbound lane, colliding with Folsom's 2012 Honda Accord, according to earlier CHP reports. Folsom, traveling southbound in the left freeway lane, was unable to avoid her, police say. Folsom later succumbed to his injuries at Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Under California law, the charge of second-degree murder applies to homicides in which a killing was intentional but not premeditated. If convicted, the charge carries a sentence of 15 years to life. Folsom, a father of two with a third on the way, was an accomplished athlete for North Medford High School and Brigham Young University. The tragedy sparked an outpouring of support that ultimately raised $304,751 for the family in 22 days on the crowdfunding site GoFundMe.
