By Nick Morgan February 05. 2016 2:19PM Vandalism causes more than $3,000 damage to beauty school Chisholm A Medford beauty school suffered more than $3,000 in damage after a transient man allegedly broke a large window and ransacked the business, police said. James Clair Chisholm, 59, faces felony charges after he was apprehended early Thursday morning inside Phagans' Cosmetology College at 2320 Poplar Drive. According to Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau, a call came in from a passerby about 2:39 a.m. that a man was knocking down trash cans in the plaza parking lot near Ross Dress for Less and had emptied at least one can in the parking lot and scattered its contents. By the time the first officer arrived, SOS alarm had reported a break-in at Phagans', adjacent to the clothing store. A large, double-pane glass window, approximately 6-by-20-feet, was found broken, and the first officer could hear crashing over the alarm, according to Budreau. A second officer was requested and arrived shortly after. Police located Chisholm inside the business talking to himself. Budreau said Chisholm was combative and would not obey police commands. "He replied by yelling profanity back at the officers," Budreau said. According to an affidavit, Chisholm told police he was angry, is "crazy," was looking for a friend, and that he wanted to sleep on one of the massage beds. Budreau said it was unclear whether Chisholm was under the influence of drugs or experiencing a mental health episode. "Sometimes it's hard to discern," Budreau said. "He didn't appear to be in his right state of mind." Chisholm allegedly admitted to causing the damage and demanded that he be taken to jail, according to the affidavit. Chisholm, however, also resisted arrest, and officers had to wrestle with him to take him into custody. He actively tried to pull away once he was in handcuffs, but Budreau said no force was needed to detain Chisholm beyond wrestling. Damage from the incident was estimated at $3,100, including a broken dispenser in a bathroom. "The majority of the damage is going to be the windows," Budreau said. Chisholm was arraigned Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court on for second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief. He remained in jail Friday on $10,000 bail.
