Nathan May didn’t rest on his laurels after a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter event at the Class 3A state meet last season. The senior still believed his best race was yet to come in an event he’s owned now for the past two seasons. He may be right. Advertisement Peaking at the right time, May broke the 9-minute mark for the second time in his career and, in doing so, eclipsed a Skyline Conference meet record in the 3,000 Friday at Southern Oregon University. With 90-degree heat baking the SOU track, May posted a winning time of 8 minutes, 57.46 seconds — nearly 12 seconds better than the previous standard set by Rogue River’s Garth Ellenburg in 1987. Mazama leads in the boys competition with 40.5 team points and Henley stands in second at 34. In girls, the Hornets hold the upper hand at 27 points and the Vikings stand second with 20. "I really stuck my nose into it this year," said May, whose personal best is an 8:56.43. "I was cruising along at a pretty good pace and I knew my lead was pretty good sized. "I definitely felt good out there." He wasn’t the only one. Lakeview junior Ryan Nash completed two phases of his quest for four state-meet berths with a victory in the long jump and a top qualifying time in the 100-meter preliminaries. Nash will also look to garner state berths in the triple jump and as part of the 4x100 relay squad during today’s competition. In the long jump, Nash cashed in on his only legal attempt with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches. Illinois Valley’s Mike Pagnotta took second at 20-4½ . Nash’s other two efforts looked more promising, but the timing was off, resulting in scratched attempts. "I really don’t know what was going on out there," said Nash of his, and some of his competitors, struggles to get in qualifying jumps. "Maybe it was the wind, I don’t know. "Everybody was struggling a little, but I’m happy just to get that one jump in." Nash is a jack-of-all trades for the Honkers squad. While he leapt to a win in long jump, his best events may be in the triple jump, where he owns a conference-best mark of 48-11 this season, and 100. "The 100 has been my most consistent event," said Nash, who finished fifth at state in the long jump last season. "I haven’t been able to really compete in triple jump for about two weeks because of a heal injury but, now that I’ve had some time off, I think I can come back and put up a pretty good jump." The Mazama girls picked up victories in the 3,000 behind a come-from-behind win by Jasmine Klauder, and the shot put as Ashley Dinwiddie out-distanced the competition with a mark of 35-11¼ . Klauder kept pace with defending Skyline champion Allegra Fety, of Rogue River, and Phoenix’s Amanda Phillips before kicking it into an extra gear down the stretch and finishing with a winning time of 11:39.84. "It was a strange race," said Phillips, who fell to third with a time of 11:43.94. "The pace seemed really slow. "When they started to pick it up at the end, I just had nothing left." Fety, who finished third at state last season, qualified for state with the second-place finish, but won’t make the trip as the conference champ. "I’m a little disappointed," said Fety, who finished in 11:40.62. "My goal was to go to state so I’m happy with that, though. "She (Klauder) just kicked it into gear at the end. I don’t have that much of a kick and I’m definitely not much of a sprinter." Illinois Valley’s Kim Hamilton rounded out the finals events on Friday with a mark of 15-3¾ to grab the conference title in the long jump. The boys high jump ended in a four-way tie with Mazama’s Don Scogin and Joshua Herzfeldt-Kamprath, Illinois Valley’s Steffen Alm and Phoenix’s Brian Bones each posting a 5-9. Meet director Ron Peck said officials will meet today to discuss tiebreaker procedures. James Meyers, of Henley, soared to 13-3 to win the pole vault competition, while the Vikings’ Jesse Johnson earned the discus title with a toss of 148-4. Competition concludes today at 10 a.m. at the SOU track.
