His love for his patients was probably unmatched. I had the opportunity to cover appointments for him when he was unable to be there. His patients told me of his late night and weekend house calls he was still making and had made during his 37 years of local practice. Dr. Bates not only helped medically but helped them with their lives. These are things nor ordinary physician does. Al Bates had an equally strong love for the people of the state of Oregon. As our state senator, he believed in the "old fashioned" premise that compromise was what politics was meant to do. As a Democrat he enjoyed reaching across the aisle to do some bipartisan compromise. He did so many things to make our state a better place to live. He died doing one of his favorite "time-off" activities, fishing with his son, here in the Rogue Valley. As in the Beatles' song "The End," "and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make!" Dr. Bates made tremendous love for family, friends, patients and state. Dr. Christopher Morgan Medford Craven politicians Your front page Aug. 6 noted how some Republicans are starting to repudiate the misogynistic bigot currently the Republican nominee. It was interesting to note that all of the politicians quoted are either retired or not currently running for office. The question that needs to be asked is why people like McCain, Ryan and Ayotte are still supporting Trump, whose stubby fingers do not deserve to be anywhere near the Oval Office and the nuclear football. A cursory review of those who think Trump is not fit to be president includes a former head of the CIA under a Republican president, and several real billionaires, which Trump is apparently not, or he would release his hidden tax returns. Those craven politicians who are trying to thread a needle by supporting but not endorsing Trump need to receive the same treatment he deserves. Absolute repudiation. Ed Cooper Gold Hill Gold Star families Most of us understand that Gold Star families should not be maligned. Pat Smith (mother of Sean Smith) and Dorothy Woods and Charles Woods (widow and father of Ty Woods) are all Gold Star family members. They were lied to their faces and called liars by Hillary Clinton. James Comey, director of the FBI, stated under oath that she lied about many things, so we as Americans are to believe her? Whatever happened to the Fourth Estate (the media watchdog of the government) in America? I believe it has became the propaganda arm of the radical wing of the Democratic party. I now know that unbiased and truthful journalism is dead. America is worse off because of their failure. RIP true journalism. Ray Novosad Eagle Point Move books inside In response to an article about the bookstore in Ashland that is displaying books containing offensive racial stereotypes in its window, the bookstore owner is mistaken in disregarding the feelings of the OSF actors and staff who have asked for them to be removed from display. First we enslaved the black man, then we demeaned him in literature. In the run-up to World War II, cartoons were published in German newspapers showing monstrous caricatures of Jews, holding bags of cash, swallowing people whole, hook-nosed, creeping like serpents. Would Judi display these pictures in her window? Their educational value might justify it. I don’t think she would. Although context might support such a choice, our better angels guide us to consider the feelings of others. Those with a shared history so rife with unimaginable suffering should have their feelings counted first. Move the books inside.
