Posted Sep. 3, 2015 at 9:34 AM Updated Sep 3, 2015 at 10:34 AM » Social News A bear was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 5 northwest of Central Point early today. A passing motorist reported the bear lying on the side of the road just before 3:30 a.m. Oregon Department of Transportation crews with a special lift truck cleared the carcass at about 7 a.m. The bear was struck near milepost 36 and was lying off I-5's southbound lanes. It did not interfere with traffic flow, ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said. Leaming said it is not unusual for vehicles to strike large animals such as bears, deer and elk in the rural region. The bear's gender and how much it weighed was not immediately available. "It does happen," Leaming said. "Most of the reports I've heard are from the south county area south of Ashland. We had a very large bear that was hit there a year or two ago." The driver of the vehicle who struck the bear did not stay at the scene.
