Grensky narrowly won the Oregon State Bar Association's preference poll Monday for the post of Jackson County Circuit Court judge position 9. About 50 percent of local attorneys' votes went to Grensky and approximately 47 percent to his opponent, Lisa C. Greif, who won the poll in April. About half of the Jackson County Bar Association's 320 members voted. "I think they've had a chance to talk to us and get to know us better," Grensky said of local attorneys. A Medford native, Grensky practices civil law and also has served as a mediator and Circuit Court judge pro tem. The former Republican state senator is making his second run at a Circuit Court judgeship after losing a high-profile campaign in 1998 to incumbent Phil Arnold. Greif is a criminal defense attorney for Southern Oregon Public Defender Inc., specializing in juvenile defense and counsel for court-protected children. She also is president-elect of the Jackson County Bar Association and will assume that post in January. Advertisement "Both Ron and I have a good deal of support among the lawyers," Greif said. "It doesn't change anything for me." Of the 165 Bar members who voted, 84 indicated their preference for Grensky in the November general election while 79 chose Greif. The new, non-partisan judgeship was created during last year's session of the Oregon Legislature in response to the county's high ratio of cases per judge. In the May primary election, Grensky earned 46 percent of votes, compared with Greif's 35 percent. A margin of 51 percent was needed to declare a winner in the race. The primary election pitted Greif and Grensky against two other opponents, including three-time judicial candidate Joe Charter, who bowed out after failing to capture the lead in April's Bar poll.
