"RVTD will own the building after it's completed," said Julie Brown, RVTD general manager. "Greyhound will be leasing it from RVTD." The $937,892 project, which broke ground last week, is funded by the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, said Jackie Rodgers, agency director. The project is on property the transportation district (see correction note below) owns adjacent to the RVTD transfer station on Front Street. The new depot is part of the $14.1 million that MURA is contributing toward The Commons, a nine-block redevelopment partnership between MURA, the city of Medford and Lithia Motors, Inc. Rodgers said construction of the new bus station is expected to be completed by late September with Greyhound moving in in October. The Greyhound Depot will have a sloped roof, similar to the 1910 railroad depot that is now Porter's Restaurant, stucco walls and brick along the bottom edge. RVTD wants to ensure the project goes forward with the least impact to its passengers, said Brown. She said an RVTD project manager is working with the construction team to maintain access and minimize confusion because some buses will be moved. After construction is complete, there will be a better station for patrons and staff, she said. And the new building allows for future expansion of the RVTD offices. "All the footings are being put in to carry the load of a second story," she said. The Greyhound bus station is being relocated from Bartlett Street to make way for The Commons, which will fill the blocks roughly between Central and Riverside avenues and Third and Sixth streets. Demolition of the old bus station along with seven other buildings was approved by the city in July. Construction of the three-block urban park begins soon. In addition to the park blocks, The Commons will include Lithia Motors' 10-story headquarters building, residential buildings, retail stores and restaurants and a parking garage.
