Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 25, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 25, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News Nov. 25, 1914 PORTLAND, Nov. 24 — James Knight was indicted by the federal grand jury in November, charged with having given a bottle of whiskey to Albert Chiloquin; Chiloquin is an Indian, and a ward of the government. It is charged that the crime was committed at Medford, Oregon, on October 16, 1914. Knight, in a statement to District Attorney Reames, says that he was in Medford but a short time prior to the commission of the crime; that he was formerly a cook, working for the Pacific Mail Steamship company, and that he was also formerly a soldier in Company "I" of the Fifth Infantry of the Philippines. On Monday he entered a plea of guilty to the indictment, and was sentenced to serve a term of three months in the county jail, and to pay a fine of $100, and costs. He will be required to remain in jail an extra month unless he pays the fine. Ed Leary was indicted by the same grand jury, charged with giving whiskey to Indians at Medford in October, 1914. He entered a plea of not guilty and will be tried next week. All of the defendants were transients, and it appeared in the investigation before the grand jury that this was the first offense committed by them. Each of the defendants claim that they had no notice or knowledge of the warnings issued by the United States attorney to the effect that all persons giving liquor to Indians at Medford would be severely dealt with. The grand jury went into the matter very carefully for the purpose of attempting to establish that the defendants did know of the warnings issued by the Medford paper, but could procure no evidence of such knowledge on the part of the defendants. On this account the United States attorney recommended leniency in each case.
