Phoenix girls' rally falls short against Hornets PHOENIX - Phoenix expended so much time rallying from a big first-half deficit, it had little left at the end and suffered a 55-45 Skyline Conference girls basketball loss to Henley Tuesday. The pressing Hornets (1-1 Skyline) built a 29-12 halftime lead, then held on as the Pirates pulled within four points and possession of the ball with six minutes to play. "We got there, but we wore ourselves out so much coming back we couldn't finish," said coach Kyle Walker of Phoenix (3-7, 1-1 Skyline). The Pirates didn't respond well to Henley's intensity and pressure at the outset and turned the ball over 21 times in the first half. Of Phoenix's 12 points in the first two quarters, eight came at the free-throw line. They attempted few field goals because of turnovers and weren't able to convert when they did get shots. "The way we were playing, we could very easily have hung it up at halftime," said Walker. "For us to come back out and play the way we did in the second half was a good sign." Jennifer Dunlap led Phoenix with 14 points and Tiffany Ross had 13 points and nine rebounds. Kandice McClung led Henley with 12 points. JV result - Phoenix won. HIDDEN VALLEY 44, ROGUE RIVER 34 - At Rogue River, senior wing Jennifer Bain scored 20 points and Shea Ford just missed a triple-double for Hidden Valley. Bain scored 16 points in the second half and nailed all six of her free throws in the final minute to seal the win. She finished 10 of 11 from the line. Ford, a sophomore post, finished with eight points, 14 steals and 15 rebounds for the Mustangs, who improved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference. Lakeview (9-3, 2-0 Skyline) got 16 rebounds from Hartman but was hurt when she fouled out in the second half, helping the Vikings' comeback cause. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 65, PROSPECT 50 - At Butte Falls, behind four players in double figures, Butte Falls jumped to 3-0 in Skyline A League South Division play. Sophomore post Sarah Matthews struck for 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Loggers (9-3, 3-0 Sky A), who ran out to a 21-14 edge through one quarter and put it away by extending to a 53-32 led through three. Junior post Krystle Rowley notched 10 of her 13 points in the first quarter for Butte Falls, and sophomore guards Asia Million (12 points) and Brianna Smeltz (10) were the other Loggers in double figures. Prospect (8-3, 1-2) was led by senior guard Sarah Gordon, who tallied a game-high 18 points but was held to just four in the second half. Cougars junior post Lacey Tallman chipped in with 14 points.
