LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 15 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 15, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 15, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Declare the war over Richard Nixon's war on drugs, announced in June 1971, had one purpose and one purpose only: to create a tool to harass, persecute and incarcerate the hippies and blacks who were protesting the Vietnam War, according to an article in the current Harper's magazine. Nixon's closest adviser, John Ehrlichman, and the president concocted this hoax for purely political reasons! Two men lied and a million died. Marijuana was at the heart of the war on drugs, and it was classified as a Schedule I drug, one that had no medical use and was highly addictive, both lies. The justification for the prohibition of marijuana has been destroyed; Obama should immediately declare the "war" over; our jails should be emptied of nonviolent drug offenders, and some reparations should be considered for the victims of Nixon's horrendous crime. I am amazed that the Ehrlichman revelation was not on the front page of every newspaper in the world. Louis Philippe Goldman Ashland Support RVTD A few years ago I lost my ability to drive due to a seizure disorder. I worried about how this would affect my ability to get around the valley. Luckily for me our community prioritizes public transportation. Without RVTD, I couldn’t get to work. Or participate in community events. Or get to doctor’s appointments. There are thousands of people like me in Jackson County who contribute to our communities but don’t drive because of medical conditions, disabilities, age or income. RVTD’s funding rate hasn’t increased in 30 years. Saturday and evening service had to be eliminated last year, along with service reductions on some routes. More cuts will be needed without adequate funding. On the election ballots due May 17, you will find Measure 15-141. It would fund RVTD, restore service and prevent more cutbacks. I hope you will vote for this basic service that connects our growing community. Sarah Westover Phoenix Read the facts After reading "Monument Transportation Plan: Two Views" I hope your readers read the facts presented and not just read what sounds and feels good. I, too, have hunted the monument for decades, four in fact. Just observation and experience, not facts, as I don't know the real numbers, but it seems to me deer numbers have gone down steadily since Clinton "made" the monument. Shutting down roads and not logging trees, seems the deer herds liked those things. I see facts, common sense, and reasoning in Mr. Reed's opinion. And in Mr. Flothos' opinion I read a statement regarding a 1,500-foot restriction regarding firing from a road. I can't find that anywhere in ODFW's 112-page regulation "magazine." I couldn't even find it in any of my old 12-page synopsis, dating back to the 1970s. If this is how Mr. Flotho reads and interprets laws and regulations, he should do us all a favor: not hunt and stay out of the woods. The law reads "from or across any road or right of way unless that road is closed to travel"(except you must be 150 feet from a vehicle when hunting antelope.
