H Some do, some don't, J.R., though from what we're told, there are alternatives to getting extra air to puppies and kittens rescued from smoke-choked homes and buildings. Ashland Fire & Rescue does have the masks, according to department battalion chief David Shepherd. He says he estimates they are needed once or twice a year and that cats are the most frequent recipient. "Usually we have pretty good success with it," Shepherd said. Medford Fire-Rescue, Jackson County Fire District 3 and Jackson County Fire District 5 do not have the specialized masks, according to battalion chiefs or captains at each of the agencies. "We looked at that option a couple years ago and decided to use regular masks," said Ken Goodson, Medford Fire-Rescue battalion chief. Capt. Brian Bolstad of Fire District 5 said his department has children-sized masks firefighters can use for animals. There is also the method of holding a mask just shy of actually putting it over an animal's face to enrich the air it breathes. "If we needed one, that's exactly what we'd do," Bolstad said.
