Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 27, 2005 Calkins cruises to Morgan Stanley title An arm injury derailed Michael Calkins’ tennis pursuits for nearly six months. But the 23-year-old University of Illinois graduate, who didn’t return to the courts until the middle of May, has made up for lost time. Calkins, seeded sixth, completed his impressive run through the men’s open singles division by defeating Sven Swinnen, 7-5, 6-2, in the finals of the $15,000 Morgan Stanley Open on Sunday at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club. Calkins, who upended second-seeded Michael Kogan in the semifinals Saturday, broke Swinnen’s serve in the first set to surge ahead to stay and earn a $2,500 payout, the second-highest prize in the Pacific Northwest Section and highest ever in the 10 years at Morgan Stanley. Calkins has now won two of three open tournaments he’s entered since recovering from the arm injury. "My serve was the main thing," said Calkins, who was part of Illinois’ 2004 national championship team, of his success this week. "I served well throughout the week, that was the key. When I’m serving well it gives me a lot of confidence and it starts to rub off on other parts of my game." Advertisement Swinnen, a University of Oregon graduate who defeated Calkins at a tournament in Salem earlier this month, held a 3-2 edge in the opening set before Calkins started to make his move. Calkins broke Swinnen at 5-4 and held on for the narrow victory. "I think that was the turning point," Calkins said. "I think he was expecting to win that game. That (loss) put the pressure back on him and I think it took a lot of steam out of him." Swinnen pulled off his own upset earlier in the tournament en route to the finals when he beat top-seeded Victor Romero, ranked 460th in the world, in Saturday’s quarterfinal round. But the Morgan Stanley championship belonged to Calkins. "I’m starting to get back into shape," Calkins said. "This (win) gets things going in the right direction." Kogan and Romero did bounce back, however, to claim the men’s open doubles title. The duo defeated the Medford tandem of Jonathan Endrikat and defending singles and doubles champ Scott Schnugg, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Sunday’s Results MEN Open Singles FINALS — Michael Calkins (6) d.
