To make a long story short, she's left-handed and she couldn't make the scissors work. It seems strange that a tool that works in one hand won't work when held in the other. It's almost like the scissors magically sense which hand they're in. Scissors are a classic example of right-handed design. Take out a pair and look at them and you will note that since the blades overlap, scissors are not symmetrical. Neither is the human hand. The thumb pushes out, and the fingers pull inward. For most people (righties), the thumb blade is closer to the body, so your digits tend to force the cutting blades together. But put those scissors in your left hand, and the motion forces the blades apart. Making matters even worse for left-handers, the cutting edge of right-handed scissors is behind the top blade when held by a lefty, and you can't see what you're cutting. Your niece needs some left-handed scissors. They have the blades reversed sothe squeezing of your handpushes the blades together, and so that lefties can see thecutting line. Result?
