None more than the 1964-65 season — Sieg’s senior year. The former Medford High standout describes that bunch as not real big and of only average ability, yet its cohesiveness set it apart. Despite no apparent stars, the Beavers finished with an 8-3 record and garnered a berth in the school’s third — and last — Rose Bowl. Advertisement OSU would lose that game, 34-7 to fourth-ranked Michigan, but the glimmer from that squad still shines bright in Oregon State lore. That Beaver team will be inducted into the Oregon State Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony today on the Corvallis campus. Joining the OSU football team in the induction ceremony will be Ray Blume (men’s basketball), Dave Brundage (baseball and football), Amy Durham (gymnast) and Cindy Greiner (track). The inductees will also be honored on Saturday during Oregon State’s home football game against New Mexico. The Beavers didn’t win pretty in 1964, outscoring opponents by an average of just under three points a game. But they managed to finish tied for first with Southern California in the Athletic Association of Western Universities at 3-1. "We were a pretty average team," says the 61-year-old Sieg, who is now retired and living in Medford with his wife, Pam. "I think we were fortunate to win a good number of ballgames." Sieg, a defensive back and offensive wingback, started for the Beavers from his sophomore season. Also on that OSU team was fellow Medford alum Al Funston and current Roseburg High coach Thurman Bell. Funston, at 5-foot-8, 179 pounds, played right guard on the OSU offense, while Bell roamed the defensive side of the ball as a left end. Sieg and Funston knew each other well. The two were products of a Medford High team that steamrolled to the 1959 state title, with Sieg the team’s leading rusher. At OSU, all three were members of the 1962 team that went to the Liberty Bowl, which Oregon State won 6-0 over Villanova. But it was Sieg’s senior season that proved special. OSU began the 1964 campaign with a loss to Northwestern before rattling off seven straight wins. The Beavers dropped another game to Stanford, then held off Oregon, 7-6, in the Civil War to earn a berth in the Rose Bowl. Against Michigan, Oregon State fell behind 12-7 at the half and failed to muster any offense over the final two quarters. Even with the loss, OSU ended the year ranked eighth in the Associated Press poll. "Mainly, I remember the losses," says Sieg of his senior campaign. "It seems like you rarely remember the wins, but the defeats always stick with you." That may be true, but after today, Sieg can look back fondly at the 1964-65 team now recognized as one of the greats in Oregon State history.
