Young Grizzlies foil Black Tornado North Medford scored wins in No. 1 singles and doubles but didn't match up with Ashland's depth Tuesday afternoon. The Grizzlies won four of five singles matches en route to a 6-3 Southern Oregon Conference boys tennis victory and spoiled North coach Ray Odor's debut. "Going into today, I had a good feeling, because we have a lot of quality players," Odor said. "I was surprised we didn't come out victorious. We won the matches that were important to district seeding handily." But the Grizzlies controlled everything after that. "It was a surprising win," admitted Ashland coach Dick Streng. The most surprising part might have been wins by Ashland freshmen Ari Zaslow, Kevin Spears and Michael James. Odor coached three years at Hickman High (enrollment 2,200) in Columbia, Mo., with his boys placing fourth in state one year and his girls third another year. North's Jon Endrikat eased to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aaron Harris at No. 1 singles, while the first two doubles matches went North's way as well. "Some of the other kids played well," Odor says. "But we weren't consistent enough to put together a run of games to pull out a couple of sets. If we had won a couple of the 7-6 sets, maybe it would've changed the outcome." Brown is committed to playing in junior tournamnets, including the Easter Bowl in Florida, and will miss the early part of the season for the Black Tornado. Black Tornado freshman Annie Chaney overcame a shaky start in No. 2 singles for a victory in her SOC debut. North Medford won three of four doubles matches to complete the victory.
