Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 21, 1915 Installation of Meters Discussed by City Council The city council at its regular meeting Tuesday night ordered the removal of the meter from the Garnett-Corey building. The meter has been a thorn for over a year, and no solution was vouchsafed for the handling of the meter question in the future. The old question of conserving the water supply was threshed out again, supporters of the plan holding that through meters alone was the city able to conserve its water supply the coming summer. Opponents of the plan hold that Medford was in no position, and the people in no humor for the installation of meters, and that it would have been about the same effect as conscription in England. It was held that two courses were open — the enlarging of the reservoir or the installing of meters. The council finally dropped the discussion as being too hot to handle. The council shelved a proposal to license interurban and jitney buses. A committee composed of councilmen Miles, Medynski and Hargreaves was appointed to investigate and report. The licensing was urged as a means of protecting patrons and pedestrians. The county fruit inspector reported to the council that the fruit trees of the city intake land were afflicted with blight. Steps will be taken at once for the eradication of the pest. Western Union's Fine Equipment ASHLAND, April 21 — Messrs. Dunbar and Sneed, expert mechanicians, have been adding to the equipment of the Western Union's repeating station here, which is the only one of its kind between Portland and Sacramento. In addition to other new apparatus, another "printer" has been installed, making three of these incomparable devices now available. These repeating headquarters are a hum of industry. They are always open, night and day, Sundays and holidays. There are no "banking hours" at the Western Union. W.E. Newcombe is manager, Fred B. Tracy and J.B. Hindman wire chiefs; S.C. Gunter, operator; Will Coburn, messenger. On all of the principal holidays the company's message blanks artistically reflect the sentiment desired to be conveyed by the specific holiday observance.
