Sexual assault survivor focuses on son’s future By Buffy Pollock Dec 10, 2022 12:30 AM A A Editor’s note: Light One Candle is an annual series sponsored by the Mail Tribune that focuses on an individual, group or organization who could use a helping hand during the holiday season. Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. This 31-year-old survivor of sexual assault doesn’t speak of her own pain. After the trauma the woman endured, compounded by the death of multiple family members, which left her without a strong support system, her 12-year-old son tried to take on the role of protector. “(He) made himself grow up too fast,” the mom says. “The man who attacked me took my son’s childhood.” Not uncommon with survivors of trauma such as assault and those directly impacted, both mother and son found themselves self-isolating at home, fearful of the world outside. The boy gained weight and has become the target of vicious bullying and is struggling with depression. Working with the Jackson County Sexual Assault Response Team to find ways of managing her own trauma and getting her life back on track, the mom can focus on her son, noting, “I want nothing else but to help my boy. I need to take care of my son and me.” Worrying about how she’ll lessen the impact the crime has had on her son, she’s hopeful for some happiness this holiday season and ways for mother and son to spend time making new memories. This holiday season, mother and son would both be grateful for things they can do together to improve their health and start feeling safer in public spaces. Suggestions include gym memberships, gift cards for some fun and stress-relieving time at Rogue Family Fun Center and any of Southern Oregon’s “wreck-it” or escape rooms. Gift cards for JC Penney and Amazon would help them buy needed winter clothes and cooking equipment to help prepare healthy meals at home. A final request from the mother, and one she believes would help them heal: “Can we ask for prayers?” “I want us to be victorious and not to be known as victims.
